YouTube Takes On Cable With partnership announcement
According to TechCrunch, Google announced partnerships with a large number of content producers to create video content for YouTube.
In a blog post announcing the news, YouTube says its goal with these channels is to “[give] you more reasons to keep coming back again and again”. The post references the so-called “defining channels” born out of cable, like MTV, ESPN, and CNN, and says that the next generation of these will emerge on YouTube.
Some believe that this is a direct attempt to compete with cable companies. I believe this move alone doesn’t accomplish that but if you consider some of the other moves Google is making like, updating Google TV, purchasing Motorola Mobility, and building a fiber network, then its very easy to believe. If fact, I have felt for a couple of years that Google in on its way to becoming a full fledged ISP in the near future.
